One day I woke up feeling the cold morning breeze entering my room from the opened window. October in New York; I have mixed feelings. The weather can be chilly but their can be warm sunny days, especially during the middays. The mornings and evenings will be crisp. It is only a matter of weeks until the first snow flake falls gently from the sky onto the streets of The Five Boroughs and the unpredictable winter season begins. My last weekend in New York had sadly come. Every second counts now. I jumped out of bed and shut the damn window. There was no time to waste, especially in a place such as The Big Apple. Every second counts...
Rush rush rush. No time to stop for anything, got people waiting to meet me in the heart of Manhattan for our last get together and say farewell to one another. I had plans for the west coast. I took the MTA towards Queens in afternoon to meet up with Jason at The Local Bar. I had to see him. He was the first person I had met when I came to New York. He was a film student from Chicago. We randomly met each other at a bar one afternoon near Hell's Kitchen and before you know it, 'Bromance was in the air'. He was alright. I would feel guilty if I didn't have a few cold ones with the bastard before taking off. Saturday nights with Jason along with a few friends was usually a wild venture beneath the yankee sky. And we would always have trouble getting back home during the early Sunday mornings because we had dry wallets and cards by sunrise.
Beers comin in one by one. Jason insisted to make it a good night out on the piss. I wanted to just chill out and enjoy the moment. He had a friend with him from film school. He was from Denmark. I forgot his name, I was quickly consumed by the early stages of drunkenness with an empty stomach. Let's go to the Bronx tonight Jason suggested with excitement. No, I am already half drunk man and need to eat something NOW! I said to him with a bit of anger. Finally, I had ordered a meatball sandwich and when the food arrived in front of my eyes, I ate it like I hadn't eaten in weeks, licking every bit of sauce on the plate. Up and down. People were staring at me funny, I did not give two shits. I was starving to death and needed something to soak up the alcohol in stomach. Better now mate? How bout we hit up on Williamsburg tonight? Jason and his mate were looking at me. Americans sound funny when they try to say the word Mate with an Australian accent. Much better dawg. Yeah, why not. I still haven't had enough time to feel the vibes from Brooklyn's night life. Answering his question with smile and threw the white serviettes on the table. Jason's friend was up for anything and would go with the flow. He was alright too.
Hours fly by. I am somewhere in Brooklyn walking towards the third bar. Jason felt responsible to the lead the gang. He wants me and his buddy to have a good time. He has a very energetic spirit when it comes to nightlife. He had broken up with his girlfriend before moving to New York and he said he was finally free and without guilt. Anyhow, I let my soul go loose and payed no attention to where I was going. Jason is alright, I have some level of trust with him. It was my last weekend in NYC. Party like there is no tomorrow.
One o'clock in the morning inside a bar thumping heavy hip hop beats. Jam-packed. Only little movements used to navigate my way to the bar. It felt like sauna inside. We were cattle jammed into a cage before slaughter. The heat made me want to throw up. I could not find Jason or his friend. I needed some space and air badly, I had forced myself through the maze of people and made it outside to inhale some fresh air. Ten minutes later, I went back into the bar to find the guys. No luck. I found a gap at the bar front. I had quickly snatched it and ordered a bourbon. I was worried. I had no idea where I was. Phone battery was low and it was something that had happen quite offend during my time in New York. I decided to keep drinking and look for them again. Bumped into a girl. She picked up my accent. We chatted, we danced and we kissed. I didn't care for Jason nor his friend from Denmark no more.
I woke up the very next day with an unfamiliar scene. Somewhere in Brooklyn. She was alright...
